vale of clyde fc history

our club from 1873

Do the Vale of Clyde have any history, yes they do and we will endeavour to gather as much information as possible. The oldest Scottish Junior Football Club was formed in 1873, the same year as another great giant in football, Glasgow Rangers Football Club. Having now celebrated over 100 years in football and still going strong the Vale of Clyde are amongst the most respected junior football clubs in the country.

Story submitted by Scott Wilson

16/06/2009 :

Vale of Clyde are Scotland's oldest Junior club.

Formed in 1873, the story goes that the club was named after a horse drawn tram car of that name whose depot and stables where situated at Auchenshuggle in Tollcross.

Playing at their first ground Boggleshole, they won their first ever trophy the Glasgow Charity Cup in season 1890/91. A season later saw them appear in and win the first of three Scottish Junior Cup finals by defeating Chryston Athletic 2 - 0 at Whitefield Park, Cambuslang after the teams drew 1 - 1 at Ibrox. Admission was 3d for this final.

The Tin Pail continued to dominate Junior football in their early years, in 1892 the reached the semi finals of the Scottish going down 2 - 1 to West Benhar Violet at Hamilton. The Following season the Premier trophy was brought back to the East End, this time by defeating Dumbarton Fern 3 - 2 at Boghead.

1904 brought Vale's third and final Scottish Cup final success this time getting the better of Parkhead 3 - 0 before a 10,000 Cletic Park crowd, the first club to win the Scottish Junior Cup three times. This was the last match played at Celtic Park before the North Stand was destroyed by fire.

Vale of Clyde moved to Germiston Park in Dalness Street before locating to Fullarton Park in 1933 when Glasgow Corporation required Germiston Park for building development. Fullarton Park has been their home since, but ambitious plans are being made and a feasibility study has been commissioned with the hope of replacing the ground with a 21st century state-of-the-art community facility.

The Tollcross side were involved in their fourth Scottish Cup final in when they were defeated 4 - 2 by Clydebank at Shawfield in front of 24,579 spectators. The cup was not presented to the Clydebank team after the game because Vale of Clyde protested about Bankies Hynds who was formerly with Motherwell.

In recent years silverware has been scarce at Fullarton Park although they won the Erskine Charity Cup in season 1979/80, beating St Roch's 2 - 1. The Central District League Cup in season 1989/90 by defeating Shotts Bon Accord 5 - 1 and a week later beat Dunipace 1 - 0 to lift the Evening Times Cup Winners Cup. When Vale won the Central 1st Division in season 2004/05, it was their first Championship since their move to Fullarton Park seventy two years earlier.
